Wiradjuri man Owen Lyons uses traditional indigenous storytelling of symbols, patterns and imagery to bring a contemporary aesthetic to the artworks he creates.

The diverse and unique patterns Owen creates in his artwork depicts the flora, fauna and landscapes of his home at Narrandera as well as from across Wiradjuri Country.

His richly detailed artworks also incorporate imagery reflecting the people and places of community he calls home.

Themes reflective of mental health also flow strong in Owen’s art, as he is a passionate advocate for those with mental health struggles, as well as their families and carers.

KANGAROO PICKING 2 – Art Print

Today I’m featuring one of my art prints call Kangaroo Picking 2.

This artwork depicts the story of the kangaroos picking the fresh new shoots of green grass along the Murrumbidgee Valley beside the beautiful Murrumbidya River.

The river winds away down through Wiradjuri Country flowing from the mountains where the blue kangaroos are at home.

It then passes through on the lower lands of the area around Wagga Wagga and Narrandera where the grey kangaroos dominate.

The river flows out to the pains of Hay where the big red kangaroo flexes their muscles.

ART PRINT ON CANVAS – GANGUDDY

Ganguddy, as it known by the local Wiradjuri people, is the are near Mudgee and Kandos. It is a stunning waterway running off the Cudgegong River, and is located in the beautiful Wollemi National Park. This is an aerial landscape of the area.

During my time creating this piece, I listened to a particular song a lot. The song was “Headlights” written by Eminem, and I could really relate to this song on many levels.

The song tells the story between a mother and son, and of the mum’s mental illness journey to recovery and forgiveness.

LARGE SCALE ART INSTALLATION – Wagga Wagga Base Hospital Airlock

One of the processes I have developed when working with my corporate clients is having my artworks digitzed and transferred onto large vinyl pieces for installation onto all sorts of large spaces.

Here is an example of an artwork that was commissioned by Murrumbidgee Local Health District, that has been transferred onto an opaque vinyl and installed as a privacy screen on the airlock in one of the new sections of the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY CANVAS ART WORKSHOP AT CONDOBOLIN

During the school holidays I ran one of my canvas youth art workshops in Condobolin on behalf of Lachlan and Western Regional Services.

It was a great day, the kids all loved working on the art and learning more about Wiradjuri culture!

And they produced some deadly artworks to take home with them.

It was a great day, and I would like to thank the LWRS team for asking me to run the workshop for the local kids.
